Findings from the Iron Age
Several locations throughout the island are dated from the Iron Age and the three most important are those in Vrycho, Agianemi and Gialomantra. At the first location Cyclopean fortification walls with irregular boulders are identified, that belonged to a settlement of the 11th century BC. On Agiameni hill another smaller enclosure was found. Both of these findings witness population’s need of relocation towards the interior of the island for safety reasons. Finally, in Gialomantra along the way between Samothraki and Palaiopoli, megalithic monuments were found.
