History of Samothraki

Since ancient times Samothraki had attracted great interest because myths and reality are blended in such a way that it is impossible to distinguish them. Probably it had been inhabited since prehistoric times during the Neolithic era, but certainly it was inhabited in the Bronze Age. It seems that the first residents of the island were Pregreek and Irodotos mentions them as Pelasgous. Already from the early Iron Age the Thracian tribes Of Seon as well of Dardanians with origin pointing to the myth of Kaveiron are mentioned on the island. So, during the quest of the original roots of the island it was named Saonisos and Dardania accordingly. Other names of the island were: Saos, Samos, Ilektris, Aithionia, Lefkosia, Lefkonia and Meliti.
